With a degree in German Philology, French Studies and Educational Science from the University of Bonn (1989), Martin started his professional career at Kaufhof Warenhaus AG as Director of Personnel Development for Young Professionals and Assistant to the Board of Management. From 1996 on, he held various personnel management positions at Deutsche Post DHL, as Head of Human Resources for Deutsche Post Consult until 1999, as Director of Human Resources for Deutsche Post Euro Express until 2002, and as Director of Human Resources for Deutsche Post Global Mail prior to joining IZA as Director of Administration in February 2006. When the Behavior and Inequality Research Institute (briq) was newly founded in March 2016, he took over the role of Chief Financial Officer at both IZA and briq. He continues to represent IZA in this position after the reintegration of briq in January 2024. Since September 2014, Martin has also been serving as Managing Director of the Foundation for Environmental Economics and Sustainability (SUN).
