Livia Alfonsi is a development economist whose research focuses on labor market frictions and determinants of labor market participation in low-income settings, with a particular emphasis on youth employment and female labor market participation barriers.

In a separate line of research, she investigates the factors that determine preferences and beliefs. Her primary goal is to deepen our understanding of the causes of poverty. Alongside that, the topics she studies are relevant to, and consequently advance work in, labor economics, gender economics, and behavioral economics. Before beginning her doctoral studies, Livia worked for several international organizations, including the World Bank, the OECD, and the United Nations. She holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Economics and Social Sciences from Bocconi University.
