Matias Berthelon

Matias Berthelon is a Professor of Economics at the Adolfo Ibañez Business School in Viña del Mar, Chile. He obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Maryland (College Park). He has been Associate Visiting Professor at the Department of Economics of Dartmouth College, Visiting Research Scholar at International Monetary Fund, and consultant for the World Bank at the Development Economics Research Group in the International Trade Division and the Development Division.

His research is focused in topics related to development economics, including the assessment of educational policies, labor markets, public health, and international trade. His research has been published in the Journal of Human Resources, Journal of Public Economics, International Journal of Public Health, Journal of International Economics, Research in Labor Economics, Economics & Human Biology, among others.

His current research includes studying the role of the Chilean full-day schooling reform on maternal job quality and labor force participation. In addition, how the policy affected school competition in local markets, as well as its effects on consumption of alcohol, tobacco and illegal drugs on school age children and adolescents. He is also researching on the effect of parental mental health on child development, and on the effect of parental violence on child development, as well as on the causes of harsh parenting styles and its regional variation in Chile.

Matias has been actively involved in the advancement of Economics in Chile, through his participation in the Chilean Economic Association (SECHI), were he has been in charge of the Organizing Committee of the Annual Meetings several times, and were he has served in the Board of Directors of the association (2016-2017), as Vice-President (2018-2019), as President (2020-2021) and as Pas-President (2022-2023).

Matias Berthelon joined IZA as a Research Fellow in May 2020.
