Joonas Tuhkuri is an economist (PhD, MIT) and an Assistant Professor of Economics at Stockholm University since 2023.
Joonas's research focuses on technology, work, and psychology using novel large-scale data. For example, his latest work documents that when firms adopted advanced technologies, they increased employment—contrasting with common concerns about the future of work. He has also created a real-time forecast ETLAnow that predicts unemployment using Google search data.
The media has featured Joonas's research widely, including in The Economist, Washington Post, and Wired. His PhD thesis was awarded the W.E. Upjohn Institute Award, and HS listed him in their 35 under 35.
Joonas joined IZA as a Research Affiliate in May 2023.
