Dirk is a Principal Economist at Amazon.com in Seattle, WA. He earned a PhD in Economics from the University of Freiburg and obtained an MSc in Economics from the Humboldt-University Berlin and an MSc in Statistics from the ENSAE, Paris.

Dirk's research interests are in the fields of Applied Microeconometrics and Labor Economics. His research focuses on the analysis of the wage structure and the effects of skill biased technological change and of trade unions on the rise in wage inequality.

He joined IZA as a Research Affiliate in November 2010 and became a Research Fellow in July 2014.
