John Winters is Professor of Economics at Iowa State University. John earned a Ph.D. in Economics from Georgia State University and a B.A. in Economics from Mississippi State University. Recent work has examined individual migration decisions, geographic differences in labor market outcomes, effects of state merit scholarship programs, self-employment outcomes, and regional economic growth. His migration research has focused on the migration decisions of college educated persons and students pursuing higher education and he has done work examining the external effects of high human capital workers on local labor markets. His research has been published in journals including Journal of Labor Economics, Journal of Human Resources, Industrial and Labor Relations Review, Journal of Urban Economics, Journal of Regional Science, Journal of Economic Geography, Regional Science and Urban Economics, Journal of Business Venturing, Small Business Economics, and Economics of Education Review.

He joined IZA as a Research Fellow in May 2012.
