Marie T. Mora, Ph.D., is currently Provost Ad Interim and Professor of Economics at Metropolitan State University of Denver, after having served as the institution's Deputy Provost. With a career as an economics faculty member spanning nearly 30 years, she has previously held leadership roles and tenured faculty positions at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley/University of Texas-Pan American, and New Mexico State University.
A labor economist, Dr. Mora has been invited to share her research expertise on the socioeconomic outcomes of U.S. Hispanics/Latinos with institutions and agencies across the U.S., including the White House, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, and others. Her publications include refereed journal articles in the American Economic Review P&P, Industrial Relations, Journal of Population Economics, Social Science Quarterly, International Migration Review, among others; numerous book chapters; two books (the award-winning Hispanic Entrepreneurs in the 2000s: An Economic Profile and Policy Implications (Stanford University Press, with Alberto Dávila) and Population, Migration, and Socioeconomic Outcomes of Island and Mainland Puerto Ricans: La Crisis Boricua (Lexington Books, with Alberto Dávila and Havidán Rodríguez)); and four co-edited volumes. She has also been PI or Co-PI on a total of $4 million in externally funded projects from the National Science Foundation and other agencies.
Regarding her professional service activities, Dr. Mora is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (AAHHE) and the Academic Advisory Board of the Economic Policy Institute, along with other boards and committees. She previously served on the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas San Antonio Branch (service for which she received commendation); Data Users Advisory Committee for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics; Editorial Board of Social Science Quarterly; and the Board of the American Economic Association Committee on the Status of Minority Groups in the Economics Profession (including one year as Chair). Dr. Mora is also a founding member and former President of the American Society of Hispanic Economists (ASHE), and she served seven years as Director of the then-NSF-funded AEA Mentoring Program, focusing on traditionally underrepresented minority economics Ph.D. students and new graduates in the U.S.
Dr. Mora’s honors and recognitions include the 2022 Academic Achievement Award from the American Society of Hispanic Economists; 2020 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) from the White House; 2017 Inspiring Leaders in STEM Award from Insight into Diversity; 2016 Outstanding Support of Hispanic Issues in Higher Education Award from the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education; and the 2015 Cesar Estrada Chavez Award from the American Association for Access, Equity, and Diversity. She was also invited to publish an essay in the Monthly Labor Review to commemorate its centennial.
Dr. Mora earned her Ph.D. in Economics from Texas A&M University, and B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of New Mexico, where she is recognized by the Department of Economics as a Distinguished Alumnus.
She joined IZA as a Research Fellow in January 2014.
